Husband held in killing of Iraqi-American woman

EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) ? The husband of an Iraqi-American woman whose beating death initially appeared to be a hate crime was arrested on suspicion of murder in what police described Friday as an act of domestic violence.

The killing of 32-year-old Shaima Alawadi drew international attention in March when the couple's 17-year-old daughter told reporters that she found a note by her mother's bludgeoned body that read: "Go back to your country, you terrorist."

Kassim Alhimidi, 48, was taken into custody Thursday after being called into the police station, said El Cajon Police Chief Jim Redman.

Police said there were no other suspects. Redman declined to comment on the evidence or elaborate on a possible motive.

"Criminal investigations build, evidence builds, and you reach a point where you have enough evidence to move forward, and that's what happened in this case," he said.

Alhimidi went to Iraq for about two weeks to bury his wife and returned voluntarily, Redman said. Police did not try to prevent him from leaving the country because he was not a suspect at the time.

At the burial in Najaf, relatives wept uncontrollably. Alhimidi and the 17-year-old daughter, Fatima, fainted as the body was lowered into the grave.

Kassim Alhimidi was publicly silent for six days after the body was found, while his children spoke often with reporters. In his first public remarks ? made at a news conference at the family's mosque in Lakeside ? he demanded to know what motivated the killer.

"The main question we would like to ask is what are you getting out of this and why did you do it?" Alhimidi said in Arabic as his 15-year-old son translated.

Alhimidi also urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement and thanked the Iraqi government for flying his wife's body to Iraq. He declined to answer reporters' questions.

Charges against Alhimidi were expected to be filed Tuesday, said Tanya Sierra, a spokeswoman for the San Diego County district attorney's office. She declined to specify the charges and didn't know if Alhimidi had an attorney.

The killing shocked residents of El Cajon, an east San Diego suburb and home to one of the largest enclaves of Iraqi immigrants in the United States.

Police initially said the threatening note meant they had to consider the killing a possible hate crime but stressed that was only one theory. They said there was other evidence and that the slaying was an isolated case, easing concerns that other immigrants could be targets.

A son told reporters at the time that another threatening note was taped to the family's front door shortly before the killing but they decided against going to police, figuring it was a prank.

Alawadi, a mother of five, left Iraq in the early 1990s after a failed Shiite uprising. She lived in Saudi Arabian refugee camps before coming to the U.S., according to Imam Husham Al-Husainy of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn, Mich. Saddam's troops hanged Alawadi's uncle.

The family arrived in the Detroit area in 1993 and later moved to San Diego. Shaima Alawadi was a religious Shiite Muslim who wore a hijab.

Alawadi's father, Sayed Nabeel Alawadi, is a cleric in Iraq, Al-Husainy, a close family friend, said shortly after the killing.

The investigation appeared to hit a snag when a court employee inadvertently gave a U-T San Diego reporter a search warrant affidavit that a judge had ordered sealed. The document said detectives found a text message sent from the 17-year-old daughter's cellphone that read, "The detective will find out tell them cnt talk."

The affidavit, which was released to the newspaper while the family was in Iraq for the burial, showed Fatima Alawadi was upset about a pending arranged marriage to a cousin. She told police that she was in her bedroom when she heard her mother squeal and glass break.

The affidavit also said Alawadi wanted to get a divorce and move to Texas.

Redman said detectives were in contact with Kassim Alhimidi during the investigation. The police chief declined to say what authorities told him when they asked him to come to the police station Thursday.

Redman said he never doubted that Alhimidi would return from Iraq after burying his wife.

"We believe he came back because he lives here," he said.

(AP) ? An activist group says twin explosions in a southern Syrian city have killed and wounded dozens of security troops.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the blasts Saturday in Daraa were caused by two suicide bombers who targeted regime forces in the city.

The group, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, says "dozens" of regime forces were killed and wounded in the near simultaneous explosions.

State-run news agency SANA says the explosions caused multiple casualties and heavy material damage but did not provide further details.

The explosions were followed by clashes between regime forces and rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad.

ShiftHub Brings The Freemium Web Model To Old-Fashioned Time Cards

portoflio-09-0f8b74e351e24d359172d27c6779c26dBack in high school when I worked at Arby's, I was very careful to punch in and out using an old, mechanical time clock. Now, however, I suspect I'd use something ShiftHub. This app, by a pair of charming Torontians (Torundians?) who have experience in retail, branding, and mobile, is an all-in-one system for throwing away time clocks altogether.

Graphic Guns N' Roses Vegas poster draws criticism

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A county commissioner in Las Vegas says she regrets the board temporarily renamed a street in honor of Guns N' Roses after finding out about the band's suggestive publicity artwork.

Ads promoting the band's four-week run at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino depict a disheveled woman who appears to be sexually assaulted beneath the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign.

"I hadn't seen the advertising before the media event," Commissioner Mary Beth Scow told the Las Vegas Sun (http://bitly.com/SfIEKp ). "It's clearly inappropriate. Maybe it's the risk of doing business with a rock band, but I guess we'll have some remorse over this decision. It's a lesson learned."

Scow represented Clark County at a ceremony Monday that renamed Paradise Road to Paradise City Road, after the band's famous 1987 song. The county prepared street signs with the new name, on a promise that the band's promoters would reimburse the $300 cost of doing so.

Scow said she'd done her due diligence before the renaming, even listening to the song beforehand. She said she liked the line in the chorus, "Take me down to the paradise city, where the grass is green and the girls are pretty."

But she later learned about the graphic posters, which are a sanitized version of the much-criticized cover from Guns N' Roses' debut album "Appetite for Destruction." The original artwork featured an apparently unconscious woman with a breast exposed and underwear pulled below her knees. A robot stands by, and a monstrous flying creature descends on the scene as if to avenge her.

It was such a controversial image when it debuted that producers ultimately put the art on the inside sleeve and used an image of skulls and a crucifix on the cover.

The versions plastered on the sides of buses and on taxicabs in Las Vegas for the residency, which begins Wednesday, have the breast covered and don't show the underwear, although the more risque version is still on the band's website.

An advocate for domestic violence victims said the county should rescind the street name change, and the band and venue should apologize for using the image.

"It functions as a mechanism to normalize violence against women, and that's not OK," Lisa Lynn Chapman, spokeswoman for women's shelter Safe Nest, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/UfZYOo ).

She also said the image could re-traumatize victims of sexual violence.

"When we start looking at pictures objectifying women, we say, 'OK, this is Vegas.' This is beyond the pale, even for Vegas," she said. "This is something that shouldn't be celebrated in any community."

Representatives for the band did not immediately return calls seeking comment Wednesday morning.

Sprint reports Q3 2012 'earnings,' posts $767 million loss

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse

Sprint has released its Q3 2012 earnings today, and things aren't looking too great. Right off the top, Sprint posted a $767 million net loss for the quarter on $7.3 billion in revenues. That's an increase in losses from the previous year, where Sprint only lost $301 million. Revenues, fortunately, are up 6-percent year-over-year.

Now onto the good (or at least better) news. A large portion of this quarter's losses can be blamed on accelerated depreciation of assets mostly related to Sprint's "Network Vision" project. On the customer side, Sprint postpaid subscriber numbers were up (for the 10th consecutive quarter), and churn was down. It also noted that the carrier surpassed the 1 million LTE smartphone sales number prior to the iPhone 5 launching, which Sprint sold nearly 1.5 million of.

You can take a look at the full press release at the source link below.

Microsoft Surface: Now the 32GB with Touch Cover sells out in UK

On Monday the basic 32GB version of Microsoft's new Surface tablet sold out on pre-order in the UK. It has now been joined by the 32GB model with Touch Cover.

Earlier this month Microsoft said a "limited quantity" of the tablets would be available for pre-order, and as of Tuesday?its pre-order page is listing the 32 GB with the black cover-and-keyboard Touch Cover as "temporarily sold out".

Only the 64GB model with black Touch Cover is currently available for pre-order in the UK, while the only accessories that can be bought through the UK store are the white Touch Cover (other colours appear to have sold out) and the Type Cover.

Surface
The 32GB Surface tablet with or without keyboard has now sold out for pre-orders in the UK.

In contrast, the US site is still offering all versions of the Surface: the basic, cover-free model is listed as having a three week-wait for delivery, with a one-to-two week wait for the other models. The white, red, cyan and magenta Touch Covers, as well as the Type Cover, are all also still available on the site too.

The French and German online stores are also still showing full stock although they are not offering all colour options for the covers.

Microsoft would not say how many Surfaces been made available for pre-order in the UK, or whether it was planning to sell the devices through retailers in the UK after its official launch on 26 October.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has described Windows 8 as "an absolutely critical product" for the company, taking Windows into the world of touch and low-power devices.

"It's a big step: it's key to where personal computing is going and we're going to get software developers behind this just like we have with every big new version of Windows," he said in an interview on a Microsoft blog.

Gates also championed Microsoft's hybrid approach with the Surface. "Surface is an unbelievably great product, it's really amazing and it embodies this idea of can you get an even better tablet but that also has what you'd expect in a PC," he said.

We?ve all seen Stewart Downing shrink before our very eyes, unsure of what decision to take next. At the same time, Raheem Sterling has burst on to the scene, full of energy, decisive and never letting his shoulders drop. Without specific reference to any particular Liverpool player, Dan Abrahams, a football psychology consultant who has worked with ?a dozen professional clubs and hundreds of players over the past 10 years? will answer a series of questions, put to him by TTT?s very own Bob Pearce. A huge thanks to Bob for asking such?intriguing?questions and to Dan for taking the time to provide such fascinating answers. Like Bob said in his reply when I sent him Dan?s answers, it went ?way, way beyond what I expected.?

Dan will also be available to answer any follow-up questions in the comments section.

Confidence

How much is confidence in football a form of ?Red Bull??

By ?Red Bull? I assume you mean ?intensity of performance.? Your theory is ?the more intense (up for it) I feel the more confident I will be?? There is a small amount of truth in that theory. As a football psychologist one of the things you are trying to help a footballer with is to find that mindset ?sweetspot? time and again. You work with them on a bunch of techniques wrapped in a match routine that helps them manage both their focus and confidence levels. This sounds simple but is not always easy to achieve. The human nervous system enjoys being inconsistent and some days it?s challenging for a footballer to ?feel up for it.?

However, confidence is more complex than that. It?s founded on a series of great habits most of which aren?t related to ?running around like a headless chicken.? The more intense you are the more you suffer from tunnel vision. Your peripheral awareness lessens so your anticipation slows and so does your decision making. A healthy balance between confidence and focus, between intensity and relaxation is required on the pitch. When balanced you can play with game intelligence.

To help a player build confidence, they need to believe in the power of belief. Are you able to help a player if they don?t believe in belief?

I partly disagree with that notion. Confidence is a product of increasing belief, improving skill and building game knowledge. Football is both confidence AND competence (and the two entwine.) If I have a player who leans more toward skill and game knowledge then I frame my philosophies, techniques and discussions around those things. Ultimately skill and knowledge resides in the brain so these areas are both pertinent and relevant for me to work on with a player.

What impact can the visible signs of confidence have on an opponent?

It?s very individual-specific but there always going to be players who can?t cope with an opponent who overtly displays confidence or uses high levels of aggression. In a long term relationship with a player, I will at some stage start to speak to him or her about ways to change the emotional chemistry of the opposition. This might involve some overt sign of confidence. You want your opponent to start to release cortisol which is your stress hormone. When this kicks in their movement is suppressed, their awareness and vision becomes poor and their decisions slow. It can even damage their coordination. Simple things like a central defender being VERY loud could damage the confidence of a striker.

Do you ever give advice to coaches on the right tone of their feedback to particular players, depending on where they are confidence wise?

Tone and the language/words they use. Players have different needs, wants, values, expectations, beliefs, experiences, temperaments etc. Players deal with things in different ways. Some you can have a sharper, harder and louder tone with. Others need a softer, more understanding voice. The ?hairdryer? concept is simplicity to the point of banality (unless of course you don?t care about excellence as a coach). If you just scream at someone you can kill their confidence. And if someone wants to point at Sir Alex Ferguson ? I would say he uses it sparingly and toward the appropriate players.

Is confidence like physical fitness ? something to build and then requiring maintenance?

Frighteningly so yes. The great American soccer player Mia Hamm said ?Confidence is like a bed. It has to be made everyday.? I have a system that helps players structure their thinking on and off the pitch that helps them manage their confidence. But it?s extraordinarily challenging for anyone. The brain has evolved to make it so. It enjoys a ?negativity bias? and is constantly appraising its environment every second of every day. That is the way the brain functions so that is how we function as people ? irrespective of our standing in society and how much money we make.

?It?s all in your head!?

Many of us will watch a penalty shoot out and say ?He?ll miss? and ?Certain to score?. Using your experience and understanding of psychology, how good are you at ?reading? penalty shoot outs?

Probably no better than anyone else. You can lack confidence but still score ? the goalkeeper is a factor as well of course. I think everyone has an intuitive feel for who is confident or not when it comes to penalties. But whether a person scores depends on other factors.

Is there any evidence of a link between low confidence and injuries or injury recovery time?

There is a link between stress and injury. A player who is stressed releases cortisol and there are links between the release of this chemical and speed of injury rehabilitation. Essentially the more stressed a player is, the slower his or her recovery rate. Experience also tells us that a player that is not 100% confident in a challenge will most likely come out worse if there is a clash of bodies.

How much is down to habits, and the breaking and replacing of ?bad? habits?

Habits are just about everything because that?s how the brain likes to work ? it enjoys patterns. I teach players how to break habits that are holding them back or improve upon the habits they already have. Remember, psychology is about using thought and behavioural strategies to change performance.

With worldwide audiences in the millions, mistakes and errors can be a potential source of extreme public humiliation. How do you advise players to deal with this awareness?

I teach them how to focus only on what they can control. They should be focusing on themselves in the present moment. They should be focusing on executing their role and responsibility and managing their mindset. That is all. This will include an awareness of what the opposition is doing but I don?t want them to dwell on that. They also need to be aware of their team mates and any instruction from the manager. But everything else is out of bounds ? the crowd, the pitch, the referee etc. Things they can?t control and have no need to. No matter how good they are, some fans won?t like them for some reason valid or otherwise. You?ve chosen to be a professional footballer so deal with it and get on with your own game.

Some teams have players who seem to take on the role of ?hero?. What impact does this have on others in their team?

Hopefully either no impact at all or pleasure in the fact they have a great player in their team. But that?s living in a perfect world and of course there is a lot of politics that goes on behind closed doors at clubs between players. It?s more of an individual sport than you?d imagine. Again my advice to players is to concern themselves only in their game. Anything else is going to halt and slow down their progression. They won?t develop skill and they won?t maintain confidence. Forget others?focus on yourself.

When some fans watch a game they see the excitement of the game, some see the tactical battle, do you ?see? the psychology struggles that individuals go through? Can you give some examples of the types of things that you?d ?see??

Yes very much so. Over the past decade working as a football psychologist I?ve watched thousands of games where I don?t really watch the ball at all. I watch the players. I watch their body language ? how they hold themselves, their movement, their vocals etc. Are they hiding or are they showing for it? Are they on their toes, as athletic and dynamic as they usually are? Are they winning the same amount of challenges on the deck and in the air as normal? Are they being vocal? Are they focusing on the referee or their game? Are they keeping the same intensity throughout the game ? if not is that deliberate or are they letting the game dictate their intensity? There are of course a lot of obvious signs of mental distress but there are lots of subtle clues to. It?s about noticing the small signs and helping players themselves to notice what is happening to them as they play.

How do you advise players to sidestep or deal with ?mind games? from opposing managers?

A player who focuses on what an opposing manager has to say is mentally weak. That?s what I say to them ? as you can imagine, that?s all I have to say to them.

What does pressure do to the mind?

Let?s be clear ? pressure can be a good thing. It can supercharge your body and focus your mind. However, unmanaged pressure can be a game destroyer. It switches off the front part of the brain ? the part that deals with thinking, emotional regulation and has some part to play in coordination. Your thoughts slow and so your anticipation and decision-making slows. You won?t see the game as quickly and as clearly. Game intelligence gone!

What psychology tips would you give to Luis Suarez?

That question assumes who I work with and who I don?t work with.

Psychological Analysis

Can you look at a player, see a change in form, and be confident that this change?was due to psychology? What would be the visible signs?

No, which is one of the drawbacks of psychology and why it will always be a discipline that some people just don?t believe in. You can take an educated guess. To my mind, ask the player ? he or she will give you their honest appraisal.

When you see a player make big public gestures when something goes wrong, what goes through your mind? How do you read those gestures?

Psychology 101 ? never assume anyone?s mindset. That player can be ?zoned? ? in their high performance match mindset ? have fun and playing with freedom ? and make a big gesture after missing an easy chance. As long as the player quickly forgets about it quickly then it?s fine. A big gesture in itself isn?t wrong and doesn?t mean that the player is distracted or in danger of losing confidence. There are cultural differences as well ? I think players from some countries tend to show more overt signs of frustration. They just have to learn to forget it as quickly as possible.

The public image of footballers is that they are not particularly bright. Does the psychological work you do with players require intelligence on the their part?

That depends on how you define intelligence. There is a societal assumption that intelligence is only related to IQ or language dexterity. There are many forms of intelligence and some of the footballers I?ve met are some of the wittiest people I?ve?ever come across (which is an intelligence in itself.). The game itself requires a great deal of cognitive intelligence ? to compete under pressure with an enormous amount of cognitive overload is highly complex. Most won?t bring a Dostoevsky novel into the training ground but isn?t that true of society anyway?

Me defending footballers aside ? it?s my job to make sure the footballer sitting in front of me understands what we?re doing. It?s not his or her job. My passion is to de-mystify sport and football psychology. Something that the psychology community hasn?t done very well. No doubt if you sit in front of any sports person or business person and start rambling on about systematic desensitisation or the inverted U hypothesis they?re going to switch off. You have to make it simple, engaging and applicable. I worked in non-league football for a few years to learn how to speak the language of football and also to understand the main challenges they are confronted with. I think this is a vital process for any sport psychologist to go through.

Do you need someone to work with you to achieve these changes, or could someone?read your book and achieve results working alone?

My book Soccer Tough was a labour of love. As I?ve said my passion is to de-mystify football psychology and that is what my book does. It has stories of the mindset challenges great footballers such as Messi, Maradona, Zola, Beckham and Rooney have had. It also has a number of my own case studies including how Carlton Cole went from forgotten reserve team player to England international; how Anthony Stokes went from four goals in a season to 20 in five months and win a dream move to Celtic; how Richard Keogh of Derby has won four player of the year awards in a row ? and many more. It?s a book everyone can read ? from professional to serious amateur to Sunday league and 5-a-side recreational player. It?s also one for coaches and volunteers and for fans who are interested in the mindset required to be a great footballer.

I work with anyone but of course working one to one isn?t for everyone. Reading my book can really help a footballer build his or her game and help a coach have a blueprint for the psychology of the game.

The worst business decisions of all time

By Douglas A. McIntyre, Ashley C. Allen, Samuel Weigley and Michael B. Sauter,?24/7 Wall Street?

In the long history of poor management decisions made at major American companies, only a few proved to be fatal. It is hard to ruin a company with a single decision. That is especially true when the company has the advantages of huge market share, large and rising revenue, and a history of success. But not all bad decisions are created equal. 24/7 Wall St. set out to identify the worst business decisions of all time. These decisions cost these companies billions of dollars and, eventually, their independence.

24/7 Wall St.: Ten Brands That Will Disappear in 2013

Bad business decisions result in financial loss. The worst business decisions lose companies billions in revenue. Our editors relied on Fortune magazine?s annual list of the largest 500 companies ranked by revenue to identify the companies that were the biggest in America and, as a result, capable of losing the most money.

To make the initial cut, companies had to be on the Fortune 100 list for at least 10 consecutive years and then drop off the top 100 ranking for good. We then looked for the companies that made a single identifiable decision that cost them significant revenue and ultimately led to their decline. Based on this cut, 24/7 Wall St. identified the eight companies that suffered from the worst business decisions of all time.

Inclusion at the top of the Fortune 500 is hard to get, but, once won, it is also hard to lose. Nearly three-quarters of 2012?s 100 largest companies have been in the top 100 for at least a decade. This includes 23 that have been there for a quarter century, as well as 13 companies that have been on the list since it debuted in 1955. Even if a company falls out of the top 100, it usually remains a large company for a long time. Seventy companies from the original Fortune 100 are still somewhere on the Fortune 500 list.

Most bad business decisions are not fatal. General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) has made several mistakes, none as harmful as the decision to continue to manufacture large vehicles when the market was trending toward smaller cars. These poor judgment calls led to GM?s bankruptcy in 2009, but with the help of a government bailout it remains in the Fortune 100 today. This is not the case with the companies on this list. The decisions made at these companies eventually ruined each of them.

The worst bad decisions fall into three categories. The managements of Lehman Brothers and Firestone were simply reckless. Leading up to the housing collapse, Lehman executives overleveraged the investment bank, far more than any other large financial institution. Firestone hastily tried to expand into production of a new kind of tire. Both companies ignored internal warnings that their decisions were highly risky.

In the case of Kodak and Motorola, management missed tectonic shifts in their industries until it was too late. Motorola held on to its old cellphone business too long, failing to leverage its Razr brand or couple it with a smartphone until the brand had lost its relevance. Kodak, which actually held a patent for digital cameras well before they were mass produced, eventually was left behind by other digital camera manufacturers like Fuji and Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) that moved quickly to establish market dominance.

Kmart, meanwhile, showed a general lack of foresight. The retailer failed to create modern supply chain management that could support an increase in customers, something it should have expected following its price war with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and aggressive advertising.

24/7 Wall St.: America's Best (and Worst) Educated States

To identify the worst business decisions of all time, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed all Fortune 500 companies since 1955 that have, at any point, been in the top 100 for at least 10 years, but were no longer among them in 2012. A company needed to have either filed for bankruptcy protection or been acquired. The declines in the company?s fortunes also had to have been traced to one identifiable bad decision. For each of these companies, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed revenue and sales data, obtained from Capital IQ, as well as stock price performance.

1. Motorola

  • Years on Fortune 500: 56
  • Peak Fortune 500 rank: 23 (1994)
  • Peak revenue: $43.7 billion (2006)
  • Current status: Split, Mobility unit sold

The success of the thin and stylish Razr cellphone drove Motorola?s 22 percent market share in mobile phones in 2006. However, the company failed to launch a new generation of smartphones leveraging the Razr brand, and by 2007 the company was selling the traditional cellphone at a discount. By the time the company released a new line of Razr phones in 2010, Motorola had to compete with products such as the iPhone and BlackBerry. While sales in 2006 were more than $43 billion, they were only $22 billion by 2010. Between October 2006 and March 2009, the company?s shares fell more than 90 percent from over $107 to less than $13. Motorola Mobility, now owned by Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), had 11.2 percent market share of mobile phones in Aug. 2012, according to comScore. Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone, released in 2007, had a 17.1 percent market share.

2. Lehman Bros.

  • Years on Fortune 500: 14
  • Peak Fortune 500 rank: 37 (2008)
  • Peak revenue: $59.0 billion (2007)
  • Status: Went bankrupt

During the final few years of the housing bubble, Lehman Brothers increased the amount it borrowed to buy more mortgage-backed securities and real estate. By 2007, the company?s leverage ratio was at least 31-to-1, meaning it borrowed $31 for every $1 in equity. This brought Lehman Brothers huge profits in the boom era but became a serious problem once the housing bubble burst. The firm was unable to unload those assets onto the market once home and commercial real estate prices began falling, leading to unsustainable losses. While other investment banks, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), were heavily leveraged as well, they were able to survive by becoming bank holding companies eligible to receive the necessary emergency funds from the government to continue operations. Those aid programs however, became available too late for Lehman, which went bankrupt in 2008. A federal-bankruptcy-court-sponsored report later found that Lehman and its accounting firm partner, Ernst & Young, used misleading accounting tactics to conceal the extent of Lehman?s overleveraging, which the authors claimed was as high as 44-to-1. Both Lehman executives and Ernst & Young denied these claims. Between 1999 and 2007 Lehman?s revenue grew from less than $19 billion to more than $59 billion. During that time, the company?s rank on the Fortune 500 rose from 88th to 37th.

24/7 Wall St.: States That Drink the Most Beer

3. Firestone

  • Years on Fortune 500: 34
  • Peak Fortune 500 rank: 24 (1956)
  • Peak revenue: $5.3 billion (1979)
  • Current status: Bought out

Firestone began manufacturing radial tires in 1972 to lengthen the life of the products. The company used a new technique to get its tires to market ahead of competitors. That year, after Firestone?s tire was in production, company documents reported that the rubber came off the wire when the tire was in use. Despite these problems, the company continued to manufacture the tires throughout the 1970s to satisfy demand from customers like General Motors. But following pressure from the government and consumer advocacy groups that were concerned about the safety of the tires, the company recalled approximately 10 million tires in 1978. Initially, Firestone blamed tire failure on substandard maintenance by the consumer. However, an investigation by the National Highway and Traffic Administration in 1980 found that Firestone was actually aware of the defective products, citing to the 1972 documents. This lead to lawsuits and negative publicity that hurt earnings and sales. Although the stock bounced back from its low of $6.25 in April 1980, shares were still below their 1969 peak of $33.25 when Bridgestone successfully bid for the company in 1988.

4. Digital Equipment Corp.

  • Years on Fortune 500: 25
  • Peak Fortune 500 rank: 27 (1990, 1993)
  • Peak revenue: $14.6 billion (1996)
  • Current status: Bought out

The fortunes of Digital Equipment Corp., maker of commercial electronics known as minicomputers, began to decline in the 1990s. DEC was successful because its products were priced below mainframes, which were made primarily by International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM). DEC controlled the minicomputer market from the mid-1960s until the early 1990s but failed to enter the workstation and personal computer markets quickly. When DEC finally decided to get into PCs, it tried to use its own operating platform, VMS, without success. Meanwhile, companies such as Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) and Sun Microsystems were able to gain market share in workstations by using UNIX operating system, which allowed for many more software applications than VMS. Meanwhile, computers from Hewlett-Packard and IBM, which were based on the Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) blueprint and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) OS, began to dominate the PC market in the late 1980s. Between 1991 and 1996, DEC lost money every year except for one, including more than $2 billion in 1992 and 1994. After joining the Fortune 500 in 1974, the company peaked in 1993 at 27th. In just six years, it fell to 118th place before Compaq bought it out in 1998.

Dissecting The Sectors: Retail, Homebuilding, And Tech | Stocks ...

Sector: Leisure/Retail
Bullish

Outlook:

Retail sales rose 1.1% in September to a seasonally adjusted $412.94 billion, said the Commerce Department, besting the average estimate for a gain of 0.7%. This marked the third consecutive month of higher consumer spending, which should bode well for discretionary stocks. On the charts, the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEARCA:XRT) has lately found support in the $62 area, site of the security's March/May highs. The next technical hurdle for XRT -- beyond its annual high at $65.47 -- could come around $67.50. This is roughly 50% above the key $45 mark, which acted as a ceiling in June 2007 and April 2010, before providing support in August/October 2011. On the options front, we are seeing huge put open interest in the November series for XRT -- which suggests long players in the sector are hedged via the ETF, and could mean limited downside on pullbacks. Among specific equities, we recommend sticking with names that have enjoyed positive reactions to earnings amid a sentiment backdrop of lingering skepticism. One example is Yum Brands (NYSE:YUM), which saw heavy put buying ahead of its well-received quarterly report. Conversely, give a wide berth to stocks like Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE:CMG) -- a pre-earnings favorite among call players, right before the burrito chain's lackluster quarterly figures sent the shares spiraling lower.

Sector: Homebuilding
Bullish

Outlook: We continue to see evidence that the housing sector is in recovery mode. The latest batch of data showed a surprisingly strong surge in housing starts, coupled with an impressive 11.3% annual jump in existing home prices. In fact, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) observed last week that the primary deterrent for many home buyers, at this point, is actually an "inventory shortage." Plus, the Fed's plan to buy mortgage-backed securities as part of its QE3 endeavor is even more bullish for homebuilders. Despite the improving fundamentals, some sell-side analysts are getting nervous. Since late September, Barclays, Susquehanna, and MKM Partners have all downgraded the housing sector, and hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson is now said to be betting against the group. This downbeat backdrop is encouraging for contrarian investors, as it sets the stage for positive momentum on any good news, and underscores our theory that the euphoria evident at tops isn't yet in place for this group. Some of our preferred names include KB Home (NYSE:KBH), PulteGroup (NYSE:PHM), D.R. Horton (NYSE:DHI), Toll Brothers (NYSE:TOL), Lennar (NYSE:LEN), and Meritage Homes (NYSE:MTH), due to a combination of solid price action and persistent skepticism from Wall Street. That said, the SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (NYSEARCA:XHB) is currently battling congestion around the $26 level, which roughly coincides with a 50% year-to-date return for the fund. In light of that fact, a prudent options strategy would be to sell put premium, and/or buy enough time to allow for a call trade to play out.

Sector: Tech
Bearish

Outlook: It's been a blisteringly bad start to the earnings season for tech stocks, with Wall Street responding negatively to the latest quarterly results from IBM (NYSE:IBM), Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), and -- in case you hadn't heard -- Google (NASDAQ:GOOG). What's more, sector heavyweight Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has now burned off nearly 100 points from its iPhone 5-inspired highs of late September. On the options front, the 50-day buy-to-open put/call volume ratio for the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) has been free-falling. This metric last checked in at 1.48, which is the lowest level since January 25. Previously, similar downturns in this ratio have coincided with poor price action for the tech-rich QQQ. That said, one risk to the bearish case is QQQ's 160-day moving average, which acted as support from May through July.

St. Marianne Cope, Pray for Us

Mother Marianne Cope

Reverend Sister Marianne
Matron of the Bishop Home, Kalaupapa

To see the infinite pity of this place,
The mangled limb, the devastated face,
The innocent sufferers smiling at the rod,
A fool were tempted to deny his God.

He sees, and shrinks; but if he look again,
Lo, beauty springing from the breast of pain!?
He marks the sisters on the painful shores,
And even a fool is silent and adores.

Robert Louis Stevenson
Kalawao, May 22, 1889

* * * * *

Mother Marianne Cope is one of the new saints canonized October 21 by Pope Benedict XVI.

The new saint from New York was born Maria Anna Barbara Koob?on January 23, 1838 in Heppenheim in the Grand Duchy of Hesse (modern-day Germany).? When she was just a year old, her family emigrated to the United States?settling in the farming community of Utica, New York.

From early childhood Maria Anna was attracted to religious life.??Attending school at the Parish of St. Joseph, she admired the sisters who had devoted their lives to Christ. ?However, her vocation was to be delayed:? Her father became an invalid when Maria Anna was in eighth grade, and she went to work in a factory to help support her family.? At age 24, when her younger siblings were old enough to assume responsibility for the family and after her father had died, Maria Anna entered the Sisters of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis, based in Syracuse, New York.

After one year in the novitiate,?Maria Anna received the habit of the Franciscan sisters and with it, her new name:??Sister Marianne.? She became a schoolteacher, then a principal, at newly established schools for German-speaking immigrants in the region.

By the 1860s, Sister Marianne had been elected?to the Governing Council of her religious order; and in that role, she was instrumental in opening two new hospitals in Central New York.? She was appointed by the Superior General to direct St. Joseph?s Hospital, the first public hospital in Syracuse, and she served in that role from 1870-1877.

Unlike other hospitals of the time,?the Franciscan hospitals stipulated in their Charter that medical care was to be provided to all,?regardless of race or creed.??She helped to further?patients? rights, insisting in a letter of negotiations with the Medical College at Syracuse University that it was the right of the patient in each and every case to decide whether or not he or she wished to be brought before medical students.? Sister Marianne was often criticized for accepting into treatment??outcast? patients such as alcoholics,?who were spurned by hospitals at the time; but she was well-known and loved among New Yorkers for her kindness, wisdom and down-to-earth practicality.

In 1883, Mother Marianne?by that time the Provincial Mother in Syracuse?received a letter from a Catholic priest?asking for help managing hospitals and schools in the Hawaiian Islands, mainly caring for leprosy patients.? She responded enthusiastically, writing,

?I am hungry for the work and I wish with all my heart to be one of the chosen ones, whose privilege it will be to sacrifice themselves for the salvation of the souls of the poor Islanders?. I am not afraid of any disease; hence, it would be my greatest delight even to minister to the abandoned ?lepers?.?

With six other Sisters of St. Francis,?Mother Marianne arrived at Honolulu in November 1883.? The sisters would manage and serve at the Kaka?ako Branch Hospital on Oahu, a receiving station where Hansen?s disease (leprosy) patients from throughout the Hawaiian Islands were sent to prevent further spread of the disease.? Within two years, the sisters had cleaned the hospital and treated the 200 patients, making major improvements in living conditions; and in 1905 they founded the Kapi?olani Home, a residence for the daughters of leprosy patients, within the walls of the hospital compound.? Fear of the disease had made public officials unwilling to care for the close relatives of those afflicted by the disease; only the sisters would welcome them and offer the home and education that these girls needed.

Mother Marianne Cope beside the funeral bier of Father Damian

In January 1884, Mother Marianne met Fr. Damien de Veuster,?who would become known as the ?apostle to the lepers.?? Two years later,?after Father Damien had been diagnosed with Hansen?s disease, the Church and the Government were afraid to welcome him; only Mother Marianne offered hospitality, after hearing that his condition had made him an outcast.? In 1888,?in the last months of Father Damien?s life, Mother Marianne became his caretaker?promising him that she would continue to care for the patients at the Boys? Home at Kalawao which he had founded.

After Father Damien?s death?Mother Marianne, with Sr. Leopoldina Burns and Sr. Vincentia McCormick, cared for 103 girls at the Bishop Home for Girls, and operated the Home for Boys.? Her cheerful countenance was an encouragement to the children and to the religious sisters in her order.? Never fearful that she would contract leprosy herself, she said,

?God giveth life; He will take it away in His own good time. Meanwhile it is our duty to make life as pleasant and as comfortable as possible for those of our fellow-creatures whom He has chosen to afflict.?

Mother Marianne Cope, O.S.F., never contracted leprosy.? She and her sisters were honored in the poem (above) written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1889. ?She died of natural causes on August 19, 1918, and was buried at the Bishop Home.

On April 19, 2004, Pope John Paul II issued the decree?officially naming her Venerable.? She was among the first group of people to be beatified by Pope Benedict XVI, and is now often referred to as Blessed Marianne of Moloka?i.

Her feast day (January 23) is celebrated?by her Congregation, as well as by the Diocese of Honolulu and the Diocese of Syracuse.? Now, with her canonization, that day will become a day of celebration and commemoration for all American Catholics.

MLS roundup: Idle San Jose clinches top mark

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:26 a.m. ET Oct. 21, 2012

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - The Red Bulls played a 0-0 tie with Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night, clinching a playoff berth for New York and the Supporters' Shield for San Jose as the team with the best record in Major League Soccer.

New York (15-9-9), which has never won an MLS title, clinched a spot in the 10-team playoffs as Columbus lost 3-2 at D.C. United.

San Jose earned home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Earthquakes also had the best record in 2005, when they were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

Kansas City (17-7-9) extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games.

Before 25,219, a record crowd at 3-season-old Red Bull Arena, New York pressed the defensive-minded visitors.

KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, who got his 15th shutout, made a diving save on Dax McCarty's 20-yard, left-footed shot in the 23rd minute, and Kenny Cooper sent the rebound over the crossbar.

Nielsen deflected Cooper's rising shot over the bar in the 41st minute. He raised a hand in the 65th to knock down a 12-yard angled shot by Thierry Henry, then had to prevent an own goal when the ball bounced off a defender.

DYNAMO 3, UNION 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Oscar Boniek Garcia and Brad Davis scored in the second half, and the Dynamo clinched a spot in the MLS playoffs.

Houston's victory, coupled with Columbus' 3-2 loss at DC United, means the Dynamo (14-8-11) can finish no worse than fifth in the Eastern Conference and are into the postseason for the sixth time in seven years. Houston extended its home unbeaten streak to 25 games, dating to June 2011.

Philadelphia (10-16-6) had won two in a row.

Garcia put the Dynamo up 2-1 in the 71st minute, taking a pass from Brian Ching, settling it down and blasting one from the top of the arc.

Jack McInerney scored in the 19th minute for the Union.

REVOLUTION 1, FIRE 0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Diego Fagundez scored in the 17th minute to lead New England to the victory and end a 196-minute scoreless streak for the Revolution.

Fagundez took a pass from Kelyn Rowe and scored from 30 yards.

Bobby Shuttleworth, dressed in pink for breast cancer awareness month, needed to make just one save in his second shutout of the season for New England (8-17-8), which already has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Chicago (17-11-5) already had clinched a playoff berth.

D.C. UNITED 3, CREW 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Lewis Neal scored in stoppage time and D.C. United secured its first playoff berth in five seasons.

Marcelo Saragosa and Nick DeLeon also scored for United (17-10-6). The Washington club ran its unbeaten streak to six games and helped eliminate the Crew (14-12-7) from playoff contention.

The win also pushed United's club home unbeaten streak to 16 (12-0-4). United won the last of its four MLS titles in 2004.

Eddie Gaven and Jairo Arrieta each scored their ninth goals of the season for Columbus.

IMPACT 0, TORONTO FC 0

TORONTO (AP) - Toronto FC's winless streak reached 13 games with the scoreless tie in its home finale.

Toronto's last MLS win was a 2-1 victory over Colorado on July 18. It has earned four of a possible 39 points during its lackluster stretch, going 0-9-4 to drop to 5-20-8 on the season.

Montreal's winless run now stands at five after its third straight draw. It's 0-2-3 since a 3-0 victory over D.C. United on Aug. 25.

The Impact (12-15-6) controlled most of the play but could not convert that edge into goals. Marco Di Vaio had two strong chances in stoppage time but his close-range shot hit a defender before a volley bounced high over the Toronto goal.

RAPIDS 2, CHIVAS USA 0

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Martin Rivero and Kamani Hill scored first-half goals for Colorado.

Colorado (10-19-4) won for the first time since Sept. 5 and guaranteed that it won't finish last in the Western Conference. Last-place Chivas (7-18-8) is winless in its last 12 games and has been shut out in six of its last seven.

The urbane, English-speaking Moussa Ibrahim, who became the international face of the regime in its final months, was captured as he was trying to flee Bani Walid, according to the Libyan State News Agency. The town has been the site of fierce fighting between pro-government forces and fighters holed up in the longtime Gadhafi stronghold.

Violence has flared periodically over the last year in Bani Walid, the most significant town in Libya still resisting the country's new authorities since the end of the country's civil war last year.

Ibrahim was the most well-known former regime figure to remain unaccounted for after Gadhafi was captured and killed by rebels as his hometown of Sirte was falling on Oct. 20, 2011, following an eight-month civil war.

"He is now being transported to Tripoli so that the investigation by relevant authorities can begin," the statement from the prime minister's office said.

The statement added that he was captured at one of the checkpoints outside Bani Walid, where fighting has raged for the past four days as government forces seek to retake the town.

A Facebook page purporting to belong to Ibrahim denied the capture, saying it was an effort to divert attention away from the "atrocities" being committed by the Libyan forces besieging Bani Walid. The site and statement could not be independently confirmed.

Fighters of the pro-government Libya Shield militia have besieged the town, some 140 kilometers (90 miles) southeast of Tripoli, for the past several weeks, blaming residents for the death of a well-known anti-Gadhafi rebel. On Wednesday, they attacked the town with mortar and artillery, then launched a ground assault after saying that negotiations to hand over the suspects in the killing had failed.

Residents in Bani Walid say the pro-government forces, which are comprised largely of the militias that overthrew Gadhafi a year, are indiscriminately shelling the town.
