PFT: Steelers LB Spence suffers ugly knee injury

Romo_Responds

We routinely receive P.R. notices aimed at persuading us to make a news item out of an advertising effort.? Usually, we invite them to contact the sales department.

Every once in a while, however, an ad masquerading as a news story becomes slightly newsworthy.

Consider the latest Starter commercial, featuring images of a non-smiling Tony Romo going through a Rocky Balboa-style gauntlet of workouts.? (The only thing missing is the periodic cry of ?Eli!?)? Off camera, Romo narrates.

?People focus on what we haven?t accomplished,? Romo says.? ?They focus on mistakes.? The near misses.? The heart breaks.? People say we haven?t succeeded.? People say we haven?t won a championship.? People critique our lives.? People say we get too much praise.? People are focused on what we haven?t done.? That?s what I?m focused on, too.?

He comes off as mildly indignant while reciting the lines, but then in the end he basically agrees with the critics.? And he doesn?t suggest that he?s using the criticism as Tebow-style ??preciate that? motivation.

It?s almost like it?s a coincidence.

It?s unclear how much if at all an ad like this provides a window into a guy?s soul.? Presumably, he wouldn?t have done it if he doesn?t believe it.? Or maybe he just didn?t sufficiently disagree with the approach to say so.

Either way, the guy in the commercial comes off very differently than the guy we?ve seen on the field for the last six years.? The guy in the commercial has zero tolerance for losing.? The guy in the commercial doesn?t seem to be content with simply going from being an undrafted player to the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.? The guy in the commercials wants a hell of a lot more than Romo has achieved.

Maybe it?s the new Romo.? We?ll begin the process of finding out on Wednesday night.

NBA 3-on-3 basketball: Does Kawhi Leonard make more sense than Tony Parker?

Home ? Fun Stuff ? NBA 3-on-3 basketball: Does Kawhi Leonard make more sense than Tony Parker?

Mar. 27, 2012; Phoenix, AZ, USA; San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan (left), guard Manu Ginobili (center) and guard Tony Parker prior to the game against the Phoenix Suns at the US Airways Center. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

While the Olympics are currently in the primordial stages, they are intent on adding more basketball events as early as the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro with a 3-on-3 tournament emerging as a real possibility.

That is an idea that is exciting in itself and the excellent staff at SB Nation have taken a different spin on the (completely hypothetical) scenario of a NBA 3-on-3 tournament.

Each NBA blog has been tasked with finding three players that are the most cohesive, talented and ideally have the optimal skills to succeed in a half-court style 3-on-3 tournament (with a 12 second shot clock that should increase the pace dramatically.)

The guys at Pounding the Rock chose the triumverate of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker which is certainly the best possible grouping of Spurs. They have two elite shot creators and a guy that can score reliably from the post, even at this stage of his career, and knock down open mid-range shots. Certainly no complaints here.

Here?s CapHill defending the selection:

?????Did we pick the old and decrepit Big Three as our team? You bet we did. Despite their collective age, the ????experience of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili would translate easily to the half-court sets of ????the 3-on-3 game, especially on offense. Tim?s ability to hit the mid-range jumper would open up the ????defense under the basket, allowing Tony a free lane to the hoop. If the oppenents? defense briefly stifles the ????Wee Frenchman?s forays into the paint, Tony would only have to dish the ball to Manu, who could nail the ????3-pointer via his patented Euro-step or drive the lane with one of his typical whirling dervish finishes at the ????hoop.

????If none of the these options work, these Spurs could always revert to 4-Down. Timmeh may be slower, but ????he still has some of the best post footwork in the NBA, and without a big help defender, he would simply ????take over this slower-paced game. No other threesome in the NBA has the corporate knowledge of each ????others? skills like these three.?

Yet, as some people have noted in the comments, Kawhi Leonard may be an even better fit than Parker despite not being as offensively gifted. This is interesting because A) he?s only 21 and B) his offensive repertoire has yet to be fully actualized.

The benefits of a Ginobili-Leonard-Duncan pairing are likely to manifest in the extra floor spacing, better defensive proficiency and the ability for Ginobili to operate primarily in the pick-and-roll, where he is slightly more deadly than as a glorified spot-up option.

He excels in both facets but once you give him primary responsibility as the ball handler, along with the deft Duncan rolling, his efficiency jumps off the charts. Even though Parker is quicker, Ginobili remains the most potent option in the pick-and-roll game because he has no negligible holes.

Leonard would serve as an ideal partner in this instance; as the Ginobili screen game garners the majority of the defenses attention, Leonard will be able to cut towards the rim without any resistance. Plus, the defensive boost the Spurs receive will help cover perimeter oriented teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets.

Parker?s offensive ability is a tad redundant with Ginobili on the floor and his defense will be a liability against teams that can attack with a combination of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook or LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. (Denver?s trio of Wilson Chandler, Andre Iguodala and Danilo Gallinari are also very interesting.) At the very least, Leonard would shave off some much needed points.

But this is just nitpicking, here.

Besides, what Spurs fan wouldn?t want to see The (Original) Big Three participate in a league wide 3-on-3 tournament?

Birmingham mosquito control - Tips for Getting Rid of Pests

Like humans, pests also need nutrients, water, and a protected habitat to survive. The best way to pest-proof your home is to eliminate such sources from areas that pests can easily reach. This method, known as exclusion, is known by all pest control companies to be the best option for getting rid of all types of pests in your home.

To get your home free of pests, start by inspecting the outside. Garbage, leaves, grass, sticks, and other debris need to be removed from your porch and yard. Large trees and bushes should be routinely trimmed, especially if they're touching or near your home. If you have dogs, cats, or birds, make sure that their living habitats are also regularly cleaned, as their food and feces is an attraction for pests.

Next, check all of the water sources in your home including; sinks, drainage systems, toilets, and hose attachments. There shouldn't be any leaks, as pests such as mosquitoes can reproduce in puddles and other places where water is enclosed. If there are places in which the water cannot be removed or cleaned, it is recommended that you obtain mosquito control dunks. These prevent mosquitoes from reproducing and are entirely safe to use in your home.

As small as a crack or hole may seem, these should always be considered as an opportunity for pests to invade. Cockroaches, mice, ants, and termites are flexible and small, which makes it easy for them to fit into the smallest opening. Examine your home (inside and out) for any holes or cracks and repair the damage immediately.

Lastly, check inside of your home for food that is not put away. Even the tiniest crumbs can attract pests. Make it a daily routine to clean up right away after eating and do not allow your children to eat anywhere but the dining room or kitchen. This will minimize the amount of food or crumbs that fall on the floor, furniture, beds, etc.

When looking for the best pest control treatment, it is important to do your research. Why? Because sometimes using sprays or other first-line products only makes the problem worse. For example, an ant infestation will usually become bigger with sprays because only the ants that were sprayed will die. Meanwhile, the queen will keep on reproducing in the nest.

You can also avoid a pest invasion by using a preventative treatment around your home. This can be done by a professional or you can apply the treatment on your own and save some money. The products come in sprays or even granules, but it is up to you to determine which is the best option. If you have pets or children, it is extremely important to make sure that the product is not toxic; otherwise, you will have to make the treated area off-limits at all times.

If in doubt, hiring a pest control company is your best bet. They are highly trained professionals who know what they're doing and can answer any questions you may have.

HICKS: No 2012 baseball champ in York County

Maybe I don't understand how this thing works.

I thought I did. I think I do. But I might be wrong.

Follow me on this:

When I sit down to watch the Super Bowl, I know it's a one-and-done deal. The team that wins the game is the champion. The team that loses is the top-ranked also-ran.

When I sit down to watch the World Series, I know it's a seven-game series. The first team to record four wins is the champion. The other team isn't.

The criteria for winning is perfectly clear. To me, at least.

And the same goes for the York County Baseball Championship Series between the champions of the Susquehanna and Central leagues.

It's a best-of-3 series. It's always been a best-of-3 series. One game on Saturday, one game on Sunday and a third game, if necessary, later on Sunday. Three games, if needed, on one weekend.

That's by necessity because the York County Championship is squeezed in between the playoff championships in both leagues and the Colonial York Baseball Tournament over the Labor Day weekend.

By design, it's not just a one-game deal. It's a best-of-3 series, which means one of the two teams has to win two games. That's not win one game and be ahead in another before the game is called because of rain. It's two games won, period.

So I guess I'm a little bit confused about what happened last weekend between the Susquehanna League representative -- Conrads -- and the Central League representative -- Stoverstown.

Now, I have nothing for or against either team. Or either league, for that matter, though it's appropriate that I reveal my long-time participation in the Central League for those readers who didn't already know that.

But I could care less who played in the championship series or who won. For all I care the game could have been played between Pleasureville and Felton or any other two matchups you could name. It just doesn't matter to me.

What does matter is that Conrads won the first game in the championship series last Saturday by a 5-1 score. Then on Sunday, it held a one-run lead over Stoverstown, 6-5, in the middle of the fifth inning when a torrential downpour rolled in. The game was called.

And when the two teams couldn't make the time to play on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday or any night this week -- allegedly because they had a couple college players who wouldn't be available -- the tournament ended. So much for 25-man rosters, I guess.

Anyway, Conrads won one game and came within three outs of winning a second. Close, but no cigar.

That certainly does not make Conrads the county baseball champion.

That's the way the rules of baseball work. The game does not become official unless and until the home team is ahead after the visiting team bats in the fifth inning, or the home team bats in the bottom of the fifth inning and the visiting team is ahead.

Neither happened in this game. For all intents and purposes the game was never played.

I wish there had been a successful conclusion to this best-of-3 series, but there wasn't. And not for the first time, either. In the 39-year history of the county championship series, it wasn't played in 1979, 1990, 2000 and 2011.

I wish the two teams had replayed the second game of the series on Monday night, but they didn't.

And I wish the two teams had played a third game on Tuesday night, if necessary, but that didn't happen, either.

Or they could come back and play the second and "if" game the weekend following the Colonial Tournament.

You know there was a time in York County baseball circles -- yes, going back 50 or 60 years -- when amateur men's baseball was actually played until the end of October because the weather remained reasonably accommodating until then.

You can bet the York College baseball team will be playing well into October in its fall program. Same goes for various American Legion programs and traveling teams from all over York County. They continue to play baseball until it's too cold to play.

But these days, in the two men's leagues, if it doesn't happen before the Labor Day weekend, it doesn't happen at all. Too bad.

I'd rather see the championship played than not played.

When one team wins two games, I'm ready to hear a champion proclaimed.

That hasn't happened yet.

So add 2012 to the list of years the series wasn't played to conclusion.

But don't crown a champion.

As it stands, there isn't one.

Advertising Websites Can Help You

With the advance of today?s technology, promoting a business online can be done easier than ever. If you are an advanced marketer who would like to achieve lasting success, there are two possible kinds of advertising which you can do today to market your business and contact a wider audience.

Online Advertising Vs. Offline Advertising

The first one is online advertising where you can market your business to the biggest audience ever. Such a method is advantageous for many companies or businesses since people nowadays are engaging into the online world. A growing number of the world?s population uses the Internet every single day for personal and business purposes. While this really is true, you being the small business owner can take advantage of the truth that whilst you wait for your big traffic flow, you can create more visitors to your site by making use of free advertising sites online. It becomes an efficient way to drive traffic towards your Internet site and market your products to countless online surfers every day.

Today, thousands of people are advertising through these sites because they can provide every business a way to touch base to a wider audience easily. But keep in mind when sharing your ads on free advertising sites? you need to stick to the sites unique terms and conditions.

A piece of advice in posting ads on these websites is always to keep track of your ads daily. By doing this, you will be able to find out if your ads are increasingly receiving the best exposure or not? so you can imagine better marketing strategies. One of the better attributes of using online advertising is the fact that you can market your offers for free, of course meaning no need to spend big money on an ad.

I propose that you just spend some time reading on the net about article promotion and search engine marketing as opposed to buying a lot of advertising.?Should you choose to join in some of the better advertising programs,? you will see them at one of my favorite websites which shows you all the best advertising sites they?ve tried out throughout the years. To visit, Just click here.

Conversely, offline advertising can also be utilized by other companies to advertise their offers. This kind of strategy differs from Internet advertising because this doesn?t use the web to promote a business. Rack cards, cards, vehicle advertising, fliers, door hangers, and newspapers? are are just some of what businesses can use promoting their business. Offline advertising permits you to personally find your intended clients. but this sort of advertising may be time-consuming. Unlike Internet marketing, offline advertising demands for additional amounts of time in spreading the word. However, in the event you use television in advertising your small business, you just might reach out to your target market but keep in mind the fact that you are going to spend? vast amounts of cash for the TV ad.

Are Radar Jammers Illegal? - Traffic Laws - Law and Daily Life

If you're thinking of using a radar jammer to avoid speeding tickets, think again. Radar jammers are illegal.

Jammers are different from the more popular radar detectors. The detectors allow you to know when cops are using radar guns on the highway. They aren't illegal for passenger vehicles but they also aren't necessarily effective since they only alert you once they detect radar. That may be too late.

Radar jammers work by effectively overcoming the radar guns used by police. The radar signals can't "see" the car which means they can't monitor your speed. The idea is that it can help you avoid a ticket but in reality, they can make the situation even worse.

It's bad news to get caught on an interstate highway with a radar jammer. We're not just talking a $100 ticket or increased insurance premiums either.

Using a radar jammer is a federal offense that can result in a $50,000 fine and/or five years in prison.

Radar jammers are also illegal in some states meaning you could be subject to punishment even if you aren't using it on a federal road. While you shouldn't have one in the first place, be especially sure not to use it in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, or Virginia.

The FCC is very strict about radar jammers which have been illegal since 1996. That means individuals are not allowed to use or sell the devices. Not only that, the FCC bans businesses from advertising the jammers in the first place.

For most radar jammers police can tell you're using one even if they can't clock your speed. The interference with the radar guns makes it clear and cops can pull you over for it.

In the case of laser speed monitoring, laser jammers are available to block monitoring beams. While those aren't against federal law, many states have passed laws banning laser jammers.

Avoid using them in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington D.C.

If you're looking for a legal way to avoid a speeding ticket, our best advice is simply "Don't speed." But if your lead foot is just too heavy, a radar jammer is not the answer. Just because it's out there doesn't mean you're allowed to use it.

Former Decorated Marines Surpass $20 Million in Funding for Lima One Capital, LLC

Lima One Capital LLC, an Atlanta hard money lender recently surpassed $20 Million in funding. Lima One Capital?s mission seeks to revolutionize and stabilize the residential real estate industry by providing first-mortgage loans to real estate investors seeking to purchase and renovate distressed homes. The company offers clients highly competitive rates, transparent terms, unmatched operational efficiency, great customer service, and fast closings. Lima One Capital currently lends in Georgia and South Carolina, with Atlanta representing its largest market. The company plans to expand to North Carolina next month, and eventually, throughout the country.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) August 29, 2012

Six years ago, John Warren and John Thompson were commanding Marines in a hard fought counter-insurgency in the ?world?s most dangerous city? of Ramadi, Iraq.

Today, however, the leaders of Lima One Capital, LLC, are shepherding $20 Million in funding for their fast-growing, residential hard money lending company with a new mission: revolutionize and stabilize the residential real estate industry by providing first-mortgage loans to real estate investors seeking to purchase and renovate distressed homes.

Instead of M-16 rifles, their new weapons of choice derive from the company?s highly competitive rates, transparent terms, unmatched operational efficiency, great customer service, and fast closings.

?We love the real estate investing industry because we recognize the social and economic impact that our clients have on communities and the economy as a whole,? says CEO John Warren.

Lima One Capital currently lends in South Carolina and Georgia, with Atlanta representing its largest market. The company will add North Carolina to the lending lineup next month as part of its domestic expansion.

?Our professionalism, integrity and customer service, gives clients a real alternative to traditional hard money lenders who are poorly capitalized and ridden with high rates and junk fees,? explains Warren. ?We quickly became the premier Atlanta hard money lender for real estate investors purchasing properties in Atlanta and we plan to bring that same model to each new market we serve,? Warren adds.

Clients of Lima One Capital span the globe. ?We serve ?hands-on? real estate investors in Atlanta, passive investors throughout the U.S. and seven foreign countries,? states COO, John Thompson. ?We do more than average Atlanta hard money lenders who just provide clients with capital. We ensure deals will be successful with our underwriting and construction draw processes. Additionally, we can introduce clients to our extensive network of real estate professionals who will assist them with property acquisition, construction and sales. We are a one stop shop for investors.?

It?s a convenience Lima One Capital client Dr. Larry Pohl appreciates. Pohl, who practices internal medicine in San Diego, invests in residential real estate in his free time. ?Not only was Lima One Capital professional and friendly, but we were able to secure a fair financial package and close within five days? Pohl said. ?I would recommend this company very highly without reservations for anyone needing loans for rehabilitating projects,? he added.

Lima One Capital clients? represent the ever-growing segment of investors within residential real estate. Recent market studies show that 27% of all homes purchased in the U.S. are by investors planning either to rent the property or ?flip? the property to an owner-occupier or another investor. Because most of these investment properties require significant construction, banks hesitate to lend on such collateral, leaving a void for investors seeking to leverage their capital.

Karina Miles is proof why this leverage is so vital to investors. Miles made a down payment of $23,780 on an investment property and elected for Lima One Capital to provide the remaining $98,924 to complete the project. In just over three months, Miles? contractor finished the project and the property sold for $191,000. Miles walked away from the deal with a profit of $53,512 and a return on her investment of 191%. Meanwhile, she was able to purchase two additional investment properties using Lima One Capital loans. Without Lima One Capital, Miles would not have chosen to fund three projects simultaneously. ?It has been a pleasure working with them and every step of the way they have been able to answer questions and lead me in the right direction with any assistance I might need,? Miles said.

Lima One?s attention to detail, dedication and service was forged in combat. Warren founded the hard money lending company in January 2010 in Atlanta, paying tribute in name to the Marines he commanded in 1st Platoon, Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, Eighth Marines. Thompson also served in Lima Company as the unit?s company gunnery sergeant. ?There was no other Marine I respected more than John Thompson. We developed a great working relationship while deployed in Ramadi, and I knew his operational skills complimented my strategic planning,? said Warren.

GOP delegates keep busy despite Isaac delay

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Dorothy Crockett wasn't about to let Isaac keep her from a minute of the Republican National Convention.

As the tropical storm churned toward the Gulf Coast, lashing Florida along the way, Crockett made her way to the arena for the convention's truncated opening ? the only official event not canceled on Monday.

"The only hurricane I want to experience is the Republicans taking over the House, the Senate and the White House," said Crockett, a 77-year old delegate from Osceola, Ark., decked out in red, white and blue from her jacket to her earrings. "This is the Republican hurricane."

Delegates biding their time until events ramp up Tuesday spent the day reuniting with fellow Republicans, getting pep talks from party leaders and holding rallies with governors. Some said they were stocked with reading material. Others showed up to the mostly empty arena to scope out their seats and to take photos in front of the empty podium.

Plus, there are always the parties ? catered receptions scheduled from morning to night.

"We're in an upbeat mood," said Stan Stein, the North Dakota Republican Party chairman. "A little bit of weather isn't going to stop us from doing what we need to do."

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus opened the convention Monday with the pound of the gavel, then less than two minutes later, called a recess until Tuesday, when Republicans will commence a condensed three-day nominating confab for Mitt Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan.

In downtown Tampa, delegates said they were using the downtime to trade stories and strategies with Republicans from all over the country. "I don't look at it like I'm losing a day. I feel like I'm gaining a day to catch up with old friends," said Sol Grosskopf, a Wisconsin delegate and seminary student.

The Wisconsin delegation got a morning briefing from Preibus, who chaired their state party before his election as national party chief, and Florida Gov. Scott Walker before assembling for a group photo. At his hotel not far from the convention arena, first-time delegate Jeff Johns from Cedarburg, Wis., savored the chance for a breather after having been on the go ever since his weekend arrival.

"This is the most relaxed I've been since I've been here," he said, reading a newspaper in the lobby. "I've been on my feet the whole time."

Delegates described being underwhelmed by the weather ? a little wind here, some clouds there ? which in Tampa fell short of the potential inclement weather that led RNC officials to cancel the first day in the interest of safety.

"We didn't even take umbrellas this morning. We didn't need them," said Pennsylvania delegate Marion Taxin after returning from an event at the city's aquarium with her home-state governor.

Delegate Tom Del Beccaro, who heads the California GOP, said his state's delegates were revved up from a morning rally with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and predicted the bottled-up energy would spill into an even more animated convention starting Tuesday.

Meanwhile, delegates from New York, South Dakota, North Dakota, Rhode Island and Wisconsin were gearing up for a joint "party on the pier" event that had been scheduled for 11 p.m. Monday but was bumped up to early evening take advantage of the hours they would have spent listening to GOP luminaries John Boehner and Mike Huckabee.

With Isaac barreling toward the coast near New Orleans just before Hurricane Katrina's seventh anniversary, GOP officials in Gulf states called off their plans to attend the convention. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal scrapped his much-awaited speech on Wednesday.

The catastrophic Katrina barreled into New Orleans as a Category 5 storm with winds topping 157 miles per hour and churning up a storm surge that breached the levees that held back Lake Ponchartrain from the city. More than 80 percent of the city was flooded and close to 2,000 deaths were blamed on the storm.

But delegates said they weren't concerned that the decision to proceed with the festivities with potential disaster looming would strike some as tone-deaf.

To cancel the convention, the delegates said, would be to abdicate their responsibility to represent the voters who sent them to Tampa.

"The convention certainly is full of the ceremonial and the balloons, but we have to officially nominate a candidate," said state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe of Pennsylvania. "It's an official duty that has to occur."

Prominent Sufi dies in Dagestan suicide bombing

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? Officials in Russia's violence-plagued Dagestan say a top Muslim religious leader and five of his followers have been killed by a suicide bomber.

A spokesman for the republic's police, Vyacheslav Gasanov, said the female bomber blew herself up at the home of Said Afandi in the village of Chirkei.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility or identification of the bomber.

Afandi was a leader of Sufi Muslims and had often publically criticized the Wahhabi sect that is the core of the insurgency in the republic. Clashes with militants and attacks on police occur almost daily in Dagestan.

Also Tuesday in Dagestan, a border guard opened fire on colleagues at a barracks, killing seven before being shot to death himself, Russian news agencies reported. There was no indication of motivation.

Oil companies, refiners brace for Louisiana-bound Isaac

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Energy companies evacuated offshore oil rigs and shut down U.S. Gulf Coast refineries on Monday as Tropical Storm Isaac threatened to reach hurricane strength and batter the country's oil refining belt this week.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) projected that Isaac, currently a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico, could strengthen markedly before making landfall in Louisiana by Wednesday, seven years after Katrina ravaged the Louisiana coast when it swept ashore as a Category 3 storm.

Late Monday, the NHC revised its forecast for Isaac, warning that it could reach Category 2 strength -- marked by winds between 96 and 110 miles per hour on the Saffir scale -- before making landfall.

Earlier Monday, it had projected a lighter Category 1 landfall.

"Reconnaissance aircraft indicates Isaac getting stronger," the NHC said in an advisory at 4:56 p.m. EDT (2056 GMT), calling the storm surge threat "significant" for the Northern Gulf Coast.

As a precaution, as of Monday afternoon the energy industry had shut down 78 percent of Gulf of Mexico crude production and 48 percent of its natural gas production, government figures showed.

Shut-ins are expected to increase over the next few days. The region accounts for nearly a fourth of U.S. oil output and 7 percent of its natgas output.

Oil and gas traders on Monday focused on Isaac's potential to tighten fuel supplies by idling refinery operations in the Gulf Coast, home to around 7.8 million barrels per day (bpd) of capacity, or 45 percent of the U.S. total.

U.S. gasoline futures rose by 2.5 percent on fears the storm could affect low-lying Louisiana refineries. Crude futures fell 0.7 percent to settle at $95.47 per barrel, on concerns oil consumption could drop as refineries are idled.

Isaac, currently around 255 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, is packing 65 mile-per-hour (100 kilometer-per-hour) winds and is expected to strengthen before reaching land, when it could cause storm surges of six to 12 feet in parts of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, the NHC warned.

"Isaac looks like a smaller storm event than Katrina was, but energy companies are following their emergency drill, which means we will lose some production and some refineries will be shut," said Citi energy analyst Tim Evans.

"They have learned their lesson from past storms."

Refineries in Louisiana usually process more than 3 million bpd. On Monday, companies including Marathon Petroleum, Valero, Exxon Mobil, and Phillips66 had closed -- or were in the process of reducing rates -- around half of the state's refining apparatus.

The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP), a major conduit for U.S. oil imports, suspended tanker unloading to brace for the storm.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it closed the port of New Orleans temporarily.

In Mississippi, Chevron Corp. said it continued to operate its 330,000 bpd plant at Pascagoula. Chevron, like many other U.S. producers, said it had shut in some offshore oil and gas output.

Energy firms, including top offshore producer BP PLC, have already idled more than a dozen major offshore oil and gas platforms since last week.

FIRST OF SEASON

The Gulf of Mexico is also the site of a vast pipeline network and 30 percent of U.S. natural gas storage.

If Isaac continues on the trajectory forecast by the NHC, it would be the first hurricane of 2012 to make landfall.

In 2005, Katrina took out around 4.5 million barrels per day of refining capacity, some of which was idled for months, driving up fuel costs.

Gasoline inventories in the Gulf Coast remain at seasonally high levels. For the week to August 17, they stood at 70.2 million barrels, or 1.1 million barrels above their five-year average level for the week, according to Department of Energy figures.

Since 2005, billions have been spent on new levees and pumping stations to lessen the potential blow from tidal surges like those that destroyed part of New Orleans seven years ago during Katrina.

"It's too early to know, but if all goes well this storm will only be a test of the emergency drill," said Citi's Evans. "In that case, energy infrastructure could be back up and running soon."

Marathon Petroleum Corp said on Monday it was initiating the shutdown of its 490,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) refinery in Garyville, Louisiana.

Phillips66 said it was in the process of shutting down its 247,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) Alliance refinery in Belle Chase, Louisiana, and that the plant would be offline by late Monday.

Synergy Effect: Raspberry Keytones

There has been tremendous hype in the media surrounding raspberry ketones. ?Raspberry ketones have been in 'fat burner' products for years and only recently have been isolated and promoted independently as a weight loss supplement. ?There is some real science behind it that shows it may produce results but as with any supplement, check with your doctor because there can be side effects.
? ? ?Raspberry ketones encourage the breakdown or metabolism of fat and that is where its 'fat burner' reputation lies. ?It has a thermogenic effect that encourages breakdown of fat cells as well as possibly?mimicking?norepinephrine (which is the fight-or-flight hormone). ?So taking too much could be dangerous for those with high blood pressure or heart issues. ?It is also said to mimick the hormone, Adiponectin, wich helps in the regulation of sugar and fat in the blood. They say people who are naturally thin have higher levels of this hormone. ?It is said that extra body weight inhibits or reduces the ability of this hormone to function so your body behaves like it's 'fat' by storing more fat instead of burning it. ?Where as if you have adequate amounts/synthesis of adiponectin, your body will burn or release fat as opposed to automatically storing it. For some, their results are the proof that it works. ?Many claim that it was a miracle for them and helped them shed long lasting unwanted pounds (in conjunction with diet and exercise). ?And for many, with the guidance of their doctor, it may be a viable addition to a weight loss plan. ?The draw back is that so far, studies have not been done on humans so it is impossible to know all or any long-term or short-term affects. ?As with any supplement (vitamin, herbal, or otherwise), you should check with your doctor first-especially if you have any preexisting conditions. ?The safest way to shed unwanted pounds is not the easiest but it produces results beyond the physical. ?Diet and exercise. ?Exercise has been shown to increase?serotonin?("feel-good" hormone), decrease cortisol (stress hormone), increase BMR (metabolism), increases confidence, produces better sleep, and the list goes on and on. ?And you can't forget what a vital part diet is. ?The list of benefits (beyond weight loss) from eating a healthy, whole, varied, unprocessed diet is immeasurable. ?I know it takes longer and it can be harder, but I prefer the amazing added benefits of losing weight the safest natural way as opposed to finding weight loss in a bottle. ?All the hard work, effort, determination, and fortitude make the goal achieved that much sweeter!

IFC wins bid for "Cheerful Weather for the Wedding"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - IFC Films has taken U.S. rights to Donald Rice's romantic comedy "Cheerful Weather for the Wedding."

The film is an adaptation of the British author Julia Strachey's novella of the same name, which was published in 1932 by the Hogarth Press. The book was recently re-released by Persephone Books.

Elizabeth McGovern, Felicity Jones, Luke Treadaway, Mackenzie Crook and Zoe Tapper star in the rom-com set in England, which had its world premiere at Tribeca earlier this year. Donald Rice directed the film from a script that he co-wrote with Mary Henely-Magill.

The story follows a reluctant bride on her wedding day in Dorset. Played by Jones, Dolly becomes even less willing to make the trip to the altar when the man of her dreams puts in a surprise appearance and threatens to spoil her mother's plans for her daughter.

New wave of technologies possible after ground-breaking analysis tool developed

New wave of technologies possible after ground-breaking analysis tool developed [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 26-Aug-2012

A revolutionary tool created by scientists at the University of Sheffield has enabled researchers to analyse nanometer-sized devices without destroying them for the first time, opening the door to a new wave of technologies.

The nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus developed by the University's Department of Physics and Astronomy will allow for further developments and new applications for nanotechnology which is increasingly used in harvesting solar energy, computing, communication developments and also in the medical field.

Scientists can now analyse nanostructures at an unprecedented level of detail without destroying the materials in the process, a limitation researchers across the world faced before the Sheffield experts' breakthrough.

Dr Alexander Tartakovskii, who led a team of researchers, said: "We have developed a new important tool for microscopy analysis of nanostructures. The very tiny quantities of matter used in nanostructures the behavior of electrons and photons is governed by new quantum effects, quite different from what happens in bulk materials.

"Development requires careful structural analysis, in order to understand how the nanostructures are formed, and how we can build them to enhance and control their useful properties. Existing structural analysis methods, key for the research and development of new materials, are invasive: a nanostructure would be irreversibly destroyed in the process of the experiment, and, as a result, the important link between the structural and electronic or photonic properties would usually be lost. This limitation is now overcome by our new techniques, which rely on inherently non-invasive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probing."

The results open a new way of nano-engineering, a full characterisation of a new material and new semiconductor nano-device without destroying them meaning more research and development and device fabrication processes.

Dr Tarakovskii added: "We have developed new techniques which allowed unprecedented sensitivity and enhancement of the NMR signal in nanostructures. Particular nanostructures of interest in our research are semiconductor quantum dots, which are researched widely for their promising photonic applications, and potential for the use in a new type of computer hardware employing quantum logic.

"The result of our experiments was quite unexpected and changed our understanding of the architecture of these nanomaterials: we learned new information about the chemical composition of quantum dots, and also how atom alignment inside the dots deviates from that of a perfect crystal. Importantly, many more measurements of optical and magnetic properties can be done on the same quantum dots which have undergone the NMR probing."

The development of the new techniques and all experimental work was carried out by Dr Evgeny Chekhovich in the group of Dr Alexander Tartakovskii at the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Sheffield. Quantum dot samples used in this work have also been fabricated in Sheffield, in the EPSRC National Facility for III-V Semiconductor Technology.

The paper, titled "Structural analysis of strained quantum dots using nuclear magnetic resonance", is published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Rates Improve; ?Gift of Equity? - CA Mortgage, CA Home Loan, CA ...

30 Year Fixed Rate Loan at a Cost of One Point: 3.375%* (APR = 3.599%*)

Rates improved a bit today again upon minimal economic news.

We often have buyers purchasing properties from close family members. These buyers often have minimal cash for a down payment, and the sellers (often parents) are willing to help the buyers out.

In these situations, the best option for a down payment is a ?gift of equity?. As long as the down payment is 20% or more, or as long as the loan-to-value is 80% or less, the entire down payment can be a gift of equity. No funds at all need to come from the buyer for the down payment.

The sellers simply have to attest the gift.

Often times we simply back into a purchase price by figuring out the desired loan amount, and then figuring out the purchase price simply by dividing the loan amount by 80% (to keep the loan-to-value ratio at 80% or less).

If the ?gift of equity? is less than 20% of the purchase price, the buyers will have to come in with at least 5% of their own funds.

As an aside, there is one more benefit from kids buying from parents: the kids can usually ?assume? the parents? property tax basis by filling out a special form with their county assessor.

*The above rate quote has the following assumptions: $500,000 purchase; $400,000 loan amount; 20% down payment; credit score above 740; property is SFR; borrower has sufficient income to qualify; Estimated closing costs affecting the APR include $4,000 for Origination Fee; $995 for Lender Fees; $2,300 for Title Insurance (CLTA and ALTA), $800 for Escrow Fee; and $1,000 for Prepaid Interest.
