Appreciating the agricultural rhythms of a global trek | Green ...

by Leigh Tillman

Picking green beans yesterday got me thinking about picking green beans in New Zealand which led to reminiscing about different farms I?ve worked on while traveling. The green bean farm was all about picking green beans all day and unlike my bosom buddy who was really good at it, I got bored! I ended up switching to a cabbage farm later in the week where we?d sit on these seats attached to the back of tractors, down low just above the soil: cabbage and broccoli seedlings would fall from a shoot and we?d plant them in the soil. Then we?d harvest in a different field with machetes, chopping off the extra leaves and throwing them up to folks on the truck who would pack them. ?At pear and apple orchards, we?d wear huge bags with draw string bottoms in front of us and climb ladders up into the branches. ?When your bag was full you?d waddle over to the crates and pull the strings to release the apples into the crate. I remember working with a Maori fellow and we?d rhyme away up there in the foliage, trying to come up with lyrics on the spot.

In Tanzania I was helping a community involved with Heifer Project International devise their own Natural Resource Management Plan. This afforded me the opportunity to work beside farmers in rice paddies and banana plantations and also learn a bit about slash and burn agriculture. Working with an older woman (who to this day has been one of my most influential mentors) I was staying with one day in her field, wielding machetes, the mayor came with a 5 kilo sack of sugar to offer in exchange for ?a wife that can work? (a.k.a. me).

In India I remember harvesting rice in a community garden. The most poignant part was the rhythm: bundling, threshing?the repetitive actions and sounds. I?ve enjoyed those rhythms here in the states as well. At Food Bank Farm in Western Mass we would run between squash that we were harvesting in the fields, keeping a pace to our work that allowed for the harvest of enough food to feed hundreds of families and send crates of seconds to the local food banks. We?d play games to keep up our pace and bring laughter into the fields. Piling in and out of farm vehicles, there and at farms here in Maine, with their loud mufflers as they had been retired from any roadworthy status, filling bins with veggies, and returning to the washing stations. Not to mention the rhythms of lunch breaks, like the feasts at a farm up on Cape Rosier or the picnics we?d take in canoes out to a house boat at FoodBank Farm: after REALLY working, taking time to REALLY pause.

So many rhythms, so different depending on the scale, the culture, the farm crew. Spraying organic, all natural nutrient blends this week, I realized how thankful I am to be able to farm at a scale where I can walk through the garden and hand-spray each plant, check on each one and see how it is growing. And also how thankful I am to have learned from so many a farmer how they approach their land and bring their own art and nuance to their day?s work.

Leigh Tillman lives, farms, writes and facilitates meetings in Portland, Maine. She has farmed in many countries and has?over the past four years in coastal Maine?developed a reputation for high-quality organic produce. ?She and several members of her community also run Chai Wallas of Maine.

Staying wise to insurance crime

It?s no wonder insurance companies and organizations take insurance crime seriously ? besides having to invest time and money to scrutinize every claim and actively police for wrongdoing, they also lose huge amounts of money each year in baseless payouts. But as you may have guessed, much of those losses are passed on to unsuspecting consumers in the form of higher premiums, among other avenues. You can protect yourself from insurance crime by being savvy and practising avoidance.

A tough economy is a breeding ground for all sorts of crime: when jobs are scarce and savings erode, easy money becomes much more attractive. In the summer of 2011 the government of Ontario introduced the Auto Insurance Anti-Fraud Task Force, which, by cutting down on crime, should help keep premiums from inflating.

Roads and parking lots commonly become crime scenes and not just because of careless driving. Sometimes a collision is pre-meditated, or staged: a driver will slam on the brakes suddenly to cause the following car to hit it. Because this kind of accident happens regularly, usually caused by a distracted driver who can?t stop in time, it makes for a convincing case. The driver in the first car may then exaggerate injuries or make claims for existing damage, resulting in payouts for medical bills and income replacement, among many other things.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada, an industry oversight organization, suggests some easy-to-follow steps, including always leaving enough stopping time between vehicles and taking the right steps after a collision. This includes documenting all the details of the crash and the other party and calling police to the scene for even minor damage. You may also want to seek out witnesses to the collision, who can provide another account.

Slips and falls are also a popular form of insurance fraud because it?s easy to exaggerate injuries or simply stage the whole thing. As a property owner or occupant you should be aware of your responsibilities in keeping the property clear of slip-inducing features like ice.

Wu and her partner He Zi won the first diving gold medal of the London Olympics on Sunday, putting the country on a path toward a possible sweep of the eight medals.

They led throughout the five-dive round and totaled 346.20 points in the 3-meter synchronized event.

"It's kind of if they mess up, then you have an opportunity," American silver medalist Abby Johnston said. "Anything can happen in this sport, so you still have that possibility."

It was Wu's fifth Olympic medal, leaving her one away from tying countrywoman Guo Jingjing's record of six medals. Guo was China's superstar diver until her retirement 1 1/2 years ago.

Wu has three golds, one silver and one bronze. She could earn another in the individual springboard event, where she has medaled twice before and will compete against He.

"It feels normal," Wu said in Mandarin. "I really don't have that many emotions."

China won seven of eight golds as the host country four years ago in Beijing and swept the golds at last year's world championships in Shanghai.

"I am impressed by them," Johnston said. "I watch their video. That's one of my training methods, just watching them and how they do it."

Johnston and Kelci Bryant finished second with 321.90 points, ending the country's diving medal drought that extended to the 2000 Sydney Games. It was the first-ever Olympic synchro medal for the Americans.

"Our curse is out of the way," said Bryant, who finished fourth in springboard synchro with a different partner in Beijing.

"Abby and I just kicked it off with this event and I think the rest of the team is going to come through," she said. "After 2008, all of us were really close and we needed to fine-tune our training."

Laura Wilkinson's gold on 10-meter platform in Sydney, where she upset the Chinese despite a broken foot, was the last U.S. medal. The Americans were shut out for the first time ever four years later in Athens and again in Beijing.

Archos Arnova GBook heads to the FCC, may have literary ambitions

Archos makes regular stops at the FCC. We know this. When it passes an Arnova-badged device called the GBook through the US agency, though, that piques our interest. The name immediately suggests a reading-friendly Android tablet in the vein of the Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet, but there's not much in the way of imagery and details to make a definitive judgment call. The hand-friendly small design and the 802.11n WiFi inside only fuel those suspicions, however. We don't see clues in the testing as to when the Arnova GBook might reach stores; that said, the looming back-to-school and holiday seasons may have some sway in getting the device to bookworms sooner rather than later.

Most Prostate Cancer Patients Don't Die From the Disease: Study

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Men with prostate cancer are more likely to die from other conditions, such as heart disease, than from their cancer, a new study finds.

Living a healthy lifestyle that helps prevent chronic diseases can prolong life even among men with prostate cancer, the researchers added.

"Our study is the first to analyze specific causes of death among men with prostate cancer," said lead researcher Mara Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Most men who died from prostate cancer over several decades of the study were men diagnosed when they were older or diagnosed before the advent of screening for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), she noted.

"We hope the study will have an impact on the clinical management of men who receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer," Epstein said.

"We hope it will encourage physicians to use the diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage men to modify lifestyle factors, like losing weight, increasing physical activity and stopping smoking," she explained. "We believe that adopting a healthier lifestyle may reduce a man's risk of other chronic medical conditions that ultimately account for more deaths among men with prostate cancer than the disease itself."

The report was published July 25 in the online edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

For the study, Epstein's team used the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program and the Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death registries to collected data on the causes of death among more than 700,000 men.

U.S. deaths were for 1973 through 2008; for Swedish men it was 1961 through 2008, the team noted.

Over these periods, 52 percent of the Swedish men with prostate cancer died, as did 30 percent of American men with prostate cancer in the study.

Of these deaths, however, only 35 percent of the Swedish men died directly from prostate cancer and only 16 percent of American men died from the disease itself, the investigators found.

In addition, as the study continued, fewer men died from prostate cancer while deaths from heart disease remained the same.

By the last five years of the study, 29 percent of Swedish men with prostate cancer died from it as did 11 percent of American men, the researchers calculated.

Deaths from prostate cancer varied by age and year of diagnosis. The most deaths were among older men and among men diagnosed before screening for PSA began, they added.

With PSA screening, prostate cancer was diagnosed early and more low-risk cancers were identified, the researchers explained.

Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colon cancer at the American Cancer Society, said that "this is a lot of reinforcement for a lot of information we already know about. Many more men die with prostate cancer than from prostate cancer."

Brooks added that "prostate cancer is largely a disease of older men, and many of the men who are diagnosed have other medical problems that end up killing them."

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing, and therefore not lethal. In a recent study it was reported that only about 10 percent of men die from prostate cancer whether they receive treatment or not, he noted.

For Brooks, these findings argue against PSA screening, which too often "leads down the path of unnecessary treatment."

"Men should understand that not every prostate cancer needs to be found and every prostate cancer that's found does not necessarily need to be treated," he said.

Another expert, Dr. Louis Kavoussi, chairman of urology at North Shore-LIJ Health System, The Arthur Smith Institute for Urology in Lake Success, N.Y., added that "prostate cancer does kill and if you pick it up early, it can be treated."

The problem with PSA screening is that too many men are treated when they don't have to be, he said. "It's not bad to detect prostate cancer. The bad thing is that you treat everybody," Kavoussi suggested.

"We need to become smarter about who actually needs to be treated and when people need to be treated," he added.

Many men don't need to be screened, Kavoussi said. Those who should be screened are men with a family history of prostate cancer, blacks and anyone else at high risk, he noted.

Rachelle's Window: Cure for AIDS Found? Interview with Through ...

Anne Marie Ruff has a plausible scenario. Her first book,?Through These Veins,?explores the relationship between biodiversity and the race to find a cure for AIDs. This exciting story crosses several continents, from a village in Ethiopia to Washington DC. Besides being a medical thriller, Through These Veins explores the cross-cultural interaction between two strong heroines and a dedicated scientist bent for answers. Anne Marie, can you tell us a bit about your background and why you decided to write Through These Veins? I didn?t set out to write fiction, which seems so contrary to the ?just the facts ma?am? axiom we associate with journalism.? I was living in Bangkok, working as a freelance journalist, with the intention of shining a light on unreported or underreported environmental stories. I also covered medical and AIDS research stories to help pay the rent, but they were not really my passion. After a year of telling gloom and doom stories about the destruction of forests, or coral reefs, or traditional agricultural varieties, I felt like even I was becoming desensitized to my deeply held belief that our collective health is inextricably linked to the health of our environment. When, in the course of my reporting, I met a charismatic Italian scientist who approached plant collecting and conservation as if it were an adventure worthy of Indiana Jones. I had a shazaam moment. He ignited an idea for a new approach, a fictional story centered on a character like him. He could carry readers around the world, and inspire in others the passion he felt for the richness of life on the planet. He could articulate the imperative to conserve it for the health and well being of this and future generations. I am grateful for the assignment to cover a scientific conference in Malaysia where I had the chance meeting with the Italian scientist, Stefano Padulosi, for it allowed me to marry my different reporting interests and use everything I learned and more in a novel way.? So facts support my fiction, and hopefully, my fiction will serve the facts. So basically, you already had a strong background in all of the scientific and technical aspects of the story. I would absolutely LOVE it if your story were true, that someone out there has a cure for HIV/AIDS. Do you think it's possible that such a breakthrough could be squashed by the government?

I think the possibility of a cure for HIV/AIDS would be of interest to the government, but could pose disincentives to pharmaceutical companies.? I would challenge you to show me one pharmaceutical company that can afford to undertake the very expensive, risky, and long-term research necessary to develop a cure for HIV/AIDS, or almost any other disease.? Drug companies produce drugs that people take over and over, therapies. ?For example, Truvada, a drug used to prevent HIV/AIDS, has just been approved by the FDA, but it needs to be taken daily. Whereas a cure is sold only once, or over a finite period of time, so the sales model simply will not support the effort.? I don't think that makes drug companies villians, drug makers are simply responding to market forces and are legally required to their shareholders to pursue the most lucrative business strategy. ?I think the problem highlights the need for different organizational models, more along the lines of what the Gates Foundation is doing, to support research into a cure for HIV/AIDS, or any other disease for that matter.?

You've traveled all around the world. What inspires you to write about people who may view the world so differently from you? For me, people are inseparable from travel, and some of the best experiences of my life have been through travel. I love to be in motion, by train, plane, automobile, bicycle, rickshaw, you name it - and all along the way I meet people who teach me things just by living their lives in ways different from my own.? This is the great university of life.? My passport stamps tend to the obscure places in the world. When I spent a lot of time traveling in my 30?s, I figured I could hit more common tourist destinations later in my life. Some of my favorite places ? perhaps all the more so because they were unexpectedly wonderful ? appear in Through These Veins. Turkmenistan was full of intense flavors, the contrasts of green orchards and barren deserts, people first guarded, then gracious. That trip gave me such a sense of adventure because I felt the place remote, cut off, unhurried, absolutely non-digital. Ethiopia offered a highly refined cultural history in the capital, set against a rich kaleidoscope of geography in the countryside ? mountains, rivers, forests, waterfalls, and birds ? oh the birds! In the 1980s Americans were conditioned to think of Ethiopia only as a place of deserts and famines. To be sure, hunger and poverty do exist in Ethiopia, but so do a million other stories. Oman is another favorite place of mine. The exposed geology of the mountains and the gracious hospitality of Arabs, especially my friend?s Bedouin family that hosted me made for an unforgettable village experience ? also off the beaten path (are you sensing a pattern here?). Driving across the Gobi desert in Inner Mongolia, a train ride down the western coast of India, a day trip from Beirut to Damascus to shop in the centuries old bazaar.?

All of these travels were populated by fascinating people.? I have always been a storyteller, and we tell what we know.? So during the years I was traveling, telling a story from a perspective broader than mine as an American seemed less of a conscious choice and more about simply drawing on what was around me.

Your photo albums must be visually rich as well. What was Ethiopia like? How hard was it for you to blend in and get a feel for the culture? Volumes have been written by many writers more qualified than I about Ethiopia?s history, politics, and culture. My objective in traveling around Ethiopia was not to become an expert on any of these things, but to experience the country, to smell it, to hear it, to taste and touch it. And in the process I had a rip-roaring good time. Of course I didn't blend in, but my obvious foreignness made me a curiosity, allowed me to meet all kinds of people; rich people, poor people, scientists and shepherds, hucksters and holy men, expats and exiles. Almost every single person I met displayed an incredible hospitality, sharing with me whatever they had ? food, song, dance, stories, intoxicants. On a bus from Gondar to Bahar Dar, I even made friends with a baby who giggled and offered me his mother?s breast after he had had his fill of mother?s milk (we all found this hilarious). I have enjoyed the bawdy humor of Asmari music and taej in small towns. I have marveled at the religious finery and felt the exhilaration in the streets of Addis during Meskal. I have followed the route of coffee from forests, to factories, to cupping conventions. I have struggled with the bad internet connections and inefficient bureaucracy. I have been awed by the architecture and art at places of pilgrimage. ?You can hear a little of what I heard through a radio musical tour of Ethiopia here.

In short, I have experienced some of the splendor and richness Ethiopia has to offer. I am grateful for these opportunities. I hope that others will be able to experience Ethiopia vicariously as they read Through These Veins, and I hope I will be able to repay some of the debt I owe to Ethiopia and the many people I met there.

Like you, I live in a neighborhood where cross-cultural relationships are the norm. My children are Chinese and Puerto-Rican and yours are Punjabi-European. Are you planning on writing any stories exploring the dynamics of family relationships and deeply held traditions? This is another beloved topic for me.? I am fascinated by the mixing of cultures, especially in situations as intimate and profound as marriage.? This year I published an article about the cross cultural population in Downtown Los Angeles, an amusing look at what happens when you mix all kinds of people together.? On a more serious level, I am writing my second novel about an American woman who marries a Pakistani man, a man who subsequently commits a terrorist act.? The story delves into some searing questions about identity and loyalty, justice and revenge.? While the book is by no means autobiographical, I am drawing on my own experience of a cross-cultural marriage (I married a Sikh man from India) and a familiarity with Islamic culture which I developed during three years I spent living in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates which hosts a large Pakistani population.? Writing the book has been an intensely emotional experience for me, kind of playing out a very scary 'what if?'.?? Sounds like a lot of intense drama! I cannot wait to read about it. Sounds like we have some time for random questions. Morning lark or night owl? White meat or dark? [I'm talking turkey here.] Thanks for being a good sport. We enjoyed talking to you. My pleasure - thanks for such a great set of questions.

One lucky commentator will win a paperback copy of Anne Marie's lovely book?Through These Veins.?Please leave a comment or question for Anne Marie and also your e-mail or how to contact you. Let's pray that a cure will be found!

Scientists: Pop music too loud, all sounds same

By Chris Wickham, Reuters

LONDON -- Comforting news for anyone over the age of 35, scientists have worked out that modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same.

Researchers in Spain used a huge archive known as the Million Song Dataset, which breaks down audio and lyrical content into data that can be crunched, to study pop songs from 1955 to 2010.

Live Poll

Do you agree that pop music is too loud, all sounds the same?

  • 188330

I agree, music isn't what it used to be.

Sounds like junk science. I love modern music!

VoteTotal Votes: 2870

A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used.

"We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," Serra told Reuters. "In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations -- roughly speaking chords plus melodies?-- has consistently diminished in the last 50 years."

The song remains the same on mix of modern pop music

They also found the so-called timbre palette has become poorer. The same note played at the same volume on, say, a piano and a guitar is said to have a different timbre, so the researchers found modern pop has a more limited variety of sounds.

Intrinsic loudness is the volume baked into a song when it is recorded, which can make it sound louder than others even at the same volume setting on an amplifier.

The music industry has long been accused of ramping up the volume at which songs are recorded in a 'loudness war' but Serra says this is the first time it has been properly measured using a large database.

The study, which appears in the journal Scientific Reports, offers a handy recipe for musicians in a creative drought.

Old tunes re-recorded with increased loudness, simpler chord progressions and different instruments could sound new and fashionable. The Rolling Stones in their 50th anniversary year should take note.

A pulsar with a tremendous hiccup

Friday, July 27, 2012

Pulsars are superlative cosmic beacons. These compact neutron stars rotate about their axes many times per second, emitting radio waves and gamma radiation into space. Using ingenious data analysis methods, researchers from the Max Planck Institutes for Gravitational Physics and for Radio Astronomy, in an international collaboration, dug a very special gamma-ray pulsar out of data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The pulsar J1838-0537 is radio-quiet, very young, and, during the observation period, experienced the strongest rotation glitch ever observed for a gamma-ray-only pulsar.

Pure gamma-ray pulsars are difficult to identify because their characteristics, such as its sky position, the period of rotation and its change in time, are unknown. And astronomers can only determine their approximate position in the sky from the original Fermi observations. They must therefore check many combinations of these characteristics in a blind search, which requires a great deal of computing time. This is the only way of finding a hidden periodicity in the arrival times of the gamma-ray photons.

Even high-performance computers quickly reach their limit in this process. Therefore, the researchers used algorithms originally developed for the analysis of gravitational-wave data to conduct a particularly efficient hunt through the Fermi data. "By employing new optimal algorithms on our ATLAS computer cluster, we were able to identify many previously-missed signals," says Bruce Allen, Director of the AEI. Back in November 2011, Allen's team announced the discovery of nine new Fermi gamma-ray pulsars, which had escaped all previous searches. Now the scientists have made a new extraordinary find with the same methods.

The name of the newly discovered pulsar ? J1838-0537 ? comes from its celestial coordinates. "The pulsar is, at 5,000 years of age, very young. It rotates about its own axis roughly seven times per second and its position in the sky is towards the Scutum constellation," says Holger Pletsch, a scientist in Allen's group and lead author of the study which has now been published. "After the discovery we were very surprised that the pulsar was initially only visible until September 2009. Then it seemed to suddenly disappear."

Only a complex follow-up analysis enabled an international team led by Pletsch to solve the mystery of pulsar J1838-0537: it did not disappear, but experienced a sudden glitch after which it rotated 38 millionths of a Hertz faster than before. "This difference may appear negligibly small, but it's the largest glitch ever measured for a pure gamma-ray pulsar," explains Allen. And this behaviour has consequences.

"If the sudden frequency change is neglected, then after only eight hours, a complete rotation of the pulsar is lost in our counting, and we can no longer determine at which rotational phase the gamma-ray photons reach the detector aboard Fermi," adds Pletsch. The "flashing" of the neutron star then disappears. If the researchers take the glitch into account and correct the change in rotation, the pulsar shows up again in the observational data.

The precise cause of the glitches observed in many young pulsars is unknown. Astronomers consider "star quakes" of the neutron star crust or interactions between the superfluid stellar interior and the crust to be possible explanations. "Detecting a large number of strong pulsar glitches makes it possible to learn more about the inner structure of these compact celestial bodies," says Lucas Guillemot from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, the second author of the study. "This is a good example of the collaboration of two Max Planck institutes with complementary research foci," says Michael Kramer, Director and Head of the Fundamental Physics in Radio Astronomy research group.

After the discovery in data from the Fermi satellite, the researchers pointed the radio telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia/USA at the celestial position of the gamma-ray pulsar. In an observation of almost two hours and by analysing a further, older, one-hour observation of the source they found no indications of pulsations in the radio range, indicating that J1838-0537 is a rare gamma-ray-only pulsar.

There were, however, noticeable overlays with observations of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in Namibia, which searches for very-high-energy gamma radiation from the depths of space. In a survey with H.E.S.S., astronomers found an extended source of this radiation near the now discovered pulsar, but have not yet been able to clarify its nature.

The discovery of the pulsar suggests that the H.E.S.S. source is a pulsar wind nebula. These are produced by particles moving at almost the speed of light, which the pulsar accelerates in its extremely strong magnetic field. Since the exact position of the pulsar is now known, H.E.S.S. can take this into account in the future and to make more precise measurements than before in this celestial region.

The ATLAS computer cluster of the Albert Einstein Institute has thus already assisted in the discovery of the tenth previously unknown gamma-ray pulsar; however, Allen's team has meanwhile mobilised further computing capacity. "Since August 2011, our search has also been running on the distributed computing project Einstein@Home, which has computing power a factor of ten greater than the ATLAS cluster. We are very optimistic about finding more unusual gamma-ray pulsars in the Fermi data," says Bruce Allen. One goal of the expanded search is to discover the first gamma-ray-only pulsar with a rotation period in the millisecond range.

Marcy Miller: The Little Blue Pill

Viagra has dramatically altered the entire dating landscape. The sex lives of the young, middle-aged and the old will never be the same.

Take young men. No longer must a young man be worried about his performance or about having a few drinks before "hooking up." He can pop a little pill at the beginning of the evening and relax, knowing that he is prepared for any conquest that may come his way.

On the other end of the timeline, there are the young women who marry old guys for their money. In order to fulfill their part of the deal, it used to be that the girls did not have much to worry about in the sex department -- they just needed to be sweet "arm candy." Now, with the invention of sexual performance drugs (SPD's), these women have their work cut out for them.

Having re-entered the dating scene at fifty after a traumatic divorce, I wondered how this pill would affect my age-group. Was it a topic of discussion on a date? Was it prevalent? Should I bring it up at some point? What I discovered was that the men who relied on SPD's were still conflicted as to whether or not to hide their dependence on them. They did not want to be viewed as "old men" who had lost some of their mojo. But in reality, if they needed pharmaceutical assistance, they surreptitiously popped a pill just in case.

But one man who I dated was not quite so cool. I was fixed up with a very handsome sixty-year-old commercial artist. He was tall and fit with beautiful white hair. He had many of the same interests as I did, so we began a comfortable dating relationship. We took walks in the park with my golden retriever. We took long drives along the beach and then had a relaxed dinner. We went to the movies and spent quality time together.

After awhile, we had a clear connection and it was time for the next phase -- a sexual relationship. But rather than make a move or talk about it, he simply asked, "Should I take my Viagra yet?"

Taking a pill was fine with me. That is why they are on the market, after all. The problem was the question itself. It seemed so cold and calculated and unromantic. And why not just take the pill and see what played out over the course of the evening? Asking made me the decision-maker as to whether or not we were going to have sex, and that ruined a lot of the spontaneity and fun.

When I questioned him as to why he asked, he explained that each pill cost $10 and he did not want to waste the money. That was the worst possible answer that he could give, and it ruined any interest that I had in pursuing any sort of relationship with him.

So what is the proper etiquette for taking a pill? If a man decides to take SPD's, that is his decision and the pill should be taken privately on his own schedule. Even after the pill is taken, it does not have to be acted upon. That preserves the spontaneity as well as the fun. It does not become a pharmaceutical mandate. I certainly want to believe that it is I who is turning him on. Maybe later in the relationship the subject can be more freely discussed, but in the beginning, I vote for romance any day.
